I am fairly new to Zeno's music, I was turned on to a Zeno song called "Sent By Heaven" and immediately identified with the Zeno theme and unique "riff" style. Being from California, ironically I was in Europe and went to Zeno's MySpace page and heard the song "Refugees" and was immediately hooked. The album "Runway to the Gods" is a complete album in that it contains soulful vocals with sweet harmonies, deep music of a spiritual nature and last, but not least excellent song writing and great guitar playing. There are traces of old European folk style music on this album, and it is refreshing. My favourite songs to date are "Climb The Sky," "Fanfares of Love," "Land Of Illusion," and of course, "Refugees." But note, there are no "clunkers" on this album.

In an age when metal bands are all writing similar, faster tempo songs with no groove, Zeno Roth comes along and shows us that the romanticism of music is not lost.

My track by track review:

"Fanfares of Love" is a pretty heavy and fast song with beautiful guitar work; many speedy solos and lovely keys! It's somehow a "Zenology" type of song and also sounds a bit like a Fair Warning rocker therefore.

After a track that's full of so much energy it's time for a more relaxed song. And there it is in the form of "Climb the Sky". The track has pretty quirky singing melodies, but I like it a lot! Michael Bormann sounds at times a bit like Andy Deris to me on this track, but don't get me wrong, "Climb the Sky" doesn't sound like Helloween at all. It's a great track and it's original in my opinion, because I can't name any other Zeno songs that are in the same vain.

And I think the same goes for "Land of Illusion". Great intro! Great song! Those majestic keyboards near the end are really cool, I love it

"Shades of Blue" is a more traditional Zeno song. But with Bormann singing it, it sounds fresh and new. I mean a new album with Flexig would have been great too but with the new singer Zeno's music has gotten a new impulse.

Another great intro on the superb title track, a beautiful song. Then follows the first instrumental piece "Sogno Di Angelo"; subtle at the beginning and after that heavenly bombastic

Yes! Eastern melodies on "Refugees (Longing for Paradise)"! An atmospheric song with guitar parts like "Circles of Dawn". The Hammond organ near the end gives it a retro 70's sound in a way, but the clear and multi layered production tells you only one thing; this is Zeno in the year 2006. Maybe my favorite song on the album, but I'm not sure yet

Wow, "I Feel - I Live" starts like a heavy Joe Lynn Turner solo song. Although I like it, a heavy rocker like this is a bit out of place on the album, but that's only my opinion.

"Purify (Pilgrims of Remembrance)" has the same class as the other great songs on the album. I especially like the swinging guitar melodies on this one.

"Do You Feel the Time"; what can I say, this is a very good song with a lot of emotion. I like the parts with Zeno Roth's singing very much, he did a good job and I wonder why he never did lead vocals before.

The second instrumental "Sunset Birds Flying Home (Celestial Touchdown)" ends the album. With a buddy of mine I talked about Steve Vai and after a while I said that I like Vai but I'm a bigger fan of Zeno Roth. Well he didn't know Zeno and I said listen to "Sunset Birds Flying Home (Celestial Touchdown)", it's fully downloadable. I don't know yet if he checked it out, but if he did he must admit that it's at the same level as Steve Vai, or even better!

It's a great album. If you are a Zeno fan get it. If you are a Michael Flexig fan; get it too, and listen to it with in mind that it's a new era in the history of Zeno. A new start? I don't know, there are so many connections with other Zeno albums, but at the same time I never get the idea that Zeno repeats himself on the songs, as I said; it's fresh.

Thank you Zeno for this new album!
